While the DARPA Robotics Challenge trials days were going on, the oil and gas company Total launched its own challenge named ARGOS. It aims at fostering the production of autonomous robots able to operate in onshore or offshore sites. Such robots should be able to endure harsh weather conditions, and operate in a potentially explosive environment.
Five teams will be selected and funded for over two yeas and half. They’ll be competing during 3 events to get an extra 500,000 Euros. During these events, robots will have to accomplish tasks related to mobility and information reporting (Reading instrument values, detecting leaks, …). The schedule is the following:
- March 18, 2014: dead-line for submissions.
- June 2014: announcement of selected teams.
- July 2015-July 2016: Competitions (3 events)
