With the technology becoming mature, a drone racing competition was unavoidable. That’s what the Drone Racing League (DRL) is about, with its drone championship debuting this year. The first round will take place in Miami’s Sun Life stadium next February 22nd, 2016. The teaser video below gives a glimpse of the arena, and its colored neon lights that make the race look like a video game.
For now, drones are controlled by very skilled pilots flying in First Person View (FPV). But, we expect that sooner or later there will be another racing competition involving autonomous drones, as it’s already the case with autonomous cars and the RoboRace planned for 2017.
If you want to join the awsome world of drones, we recommend picking either the DJI Phantom 3 (~ $500) or the 3D Robotics Solo (~ $850). There are much cheaper drones out there. But, the Phantom and the Solo surpass the others. They are well designed, robust and easy to fly. Besides, they have many accessories. So, you can start with the bare minimum and extend your quadcopter to turn it into a professional grade drone.
We leave you with a recommendation. Once you get your drone, take few minutes to go through the “Think Before You Launch” web site. It provides useful hints to fly safely, summarized in a nice inforgraphics.
