This week news make us expect humanoid robots walking autonomously in a crowded side walk in about 8 years from now. Yes, by 2020! The Darpa is preparing a new grand challenge where humanoid robots should exhibit a demanding mission. We couldn’t resist the parallel with autonomous cars. Back in 2002, the Darpa did launched the first challenge for unmanned ground vehicles (UGV). In march 2004, competing UGVs had to simply to go from one place to another one 132 miles (212 km) far, across the Mojave Desert. Not a single robotic vehicle among the 25 participants traveled more than 5% of the course! In 2005, five vehicles reached the finish line. Four of them completed the challenge under the 10 hours limit. Two years later, Darpa raised the bar with the Urban Challenge. The 35 competing robots had to drive together with 30 more vehicles with human drivers introduced to increase traffic density. Complex maneuvers such as passing, parking and negotiating intersections were on the menu. 11 teams made it to the final, among which 6 did achieve the challenge! In 2010, that is 8 years after the announcement of the first Darpa challenge, Google made public its driverless car project, and performed real world experiments. Tests with Google robotics cars driving the highway along with other vehicles were officially launched. June 2011, the state of Nevada was the first to enact a law to authorize driver-less vehicles.  We envision that humanoid robotics will follow a similar progression. We expect that the field will make fast progress within the forthcoming few years. Before leaving you with videos and other news of the week, it is worth noting that when it comes to humanoid robots, Japan seems to be the current leader of the field. Nevertheless, the US has some promising projects. Boston Dynamics’ Petman is already impressive with its realistic walk. There are also research groups and companies that can provide some critical parts such as Luke’s dexterous arm. The future is bright!
